History of the Renaissance Golf Course
The Renaissance Planned Retirement Community consists of 663 acres located in eastern Manchester Township, NJ. Elevation varies from about 60 to 87 feet above sea level. The land on which Renaissance is built is typical south Jersey pinelands. The underlying sand, however, is rich in the mineral ilmenite, which can be refined into titanium dioxide, a primary ingredient of paint. This tract was mined extensively starting in the 1950s. The land was owned by the Stavola family. In the late 1980s, Stavola Realty joined with Leisure Technologies to develop the mined-out land east of the Conrail tracks between the Toms River and Wilbur Avenue as a Planned Retirement Community (PRC), named Leisure Glen. That project did not get off the ground, and in 1995 Stavola joined forces with Calton, Inc. to present a plan to develop 2578 homes on Leisure Glen (now, Renaissance).
On December 31, 1998, Calton, Inc. sold the stock of its subsidiary, Calton Homes, Inc., to Centex Real Estate Corporation. The development was renamed Renaissance at Manchester. As development continued over the years, the total number of homes gradually decreased from the original 2578. In 2006, when
construction was complete, the final total was 1902 homes.
Today, Renaissance at Manchester is an active adult community. It has a large Clubhouse which contains a ballroom, meeting rooms, a deli, a fitness center, a billiards room, and an indoor pool. The community has an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, bocce courts, shuffleboard courts, a pickle ball court, an 18 hole Executive Golf Course, a golf shop and a putting green. In addition to the facilities, residents have a variety of clubs and activities to keep themselves busy. As a resident of Renaissance, you can do as much or as little as you want, the choice is yours.
The Golf Course, designed by J. Christopher Commins, ASGCA, opened in 1999 as a nine hole course. As the development grew, so did the course. The back nine was developed and built during 2001 and 2002. Today, the course consists of 18 holes that meanders throughout the community. The course is open from April 1st
until December 31st.
